Peter, do you think they will abandon this design on their XTR wheels?
I think they've abandoned it on their Dura-Ace wheels to copy Mavic
since they are having a hard time getting in to this segment of the
market. Or simply, the design is less aerodymanic.

The weakest part of a rear wheel is the very small spoke-angle on the
drive side. With "lateral crossover" spokes, the angle is increased
thereby making the wheel stronger.

Also, Mavic must beef-up the metal around the rim where the spokes
holes are to support the higher spoke tension. Shimano's design uses
the rim's depth so it doesn't need more metal to prevent spokes from
pulling through. (I say "Shimano's design" but I'm not so sure it is
there's.)

A local bike shop that specializes in road bikes says that they see
fewer problems w/these than w/the Mavics. That's hardly a scientific
survey, I know, but it's still interesting.

Don't know but they seem to design, sell, redesign, sell a lot of things, like
BBs, shifters, wheels, pedals, etc. It appears if they don't do what they want,
either marketing wise or performance wise, then they change them, Like SPD-R,
then a few years later, ya can't find cleats, for instance.
