Default Azonic Evolution frame/Shimano XT disc brake problem

I have a 2002 Azonic DS-1 Evolution and I just tried to fit some 2002
Shimano XT disc brakes. Unfortunately, this is impossible because the
rotor fouls the caliper with the wheel any more than about 1/2" from
the front of the dropout slot. This means I can't run the gearing I
want, and I can't remove the wheel without removing the brake caliper.

Any helpful suggestions gratefully received. I don't really want to
add an adapter and a larger than standard disc, but I'd happily fit a
2004 XT or XTR caliper if it would solve the problem.
