"No vehicle is safe. The convoy roars past a clutch of bicyclists, the Iraqi national cycling team. Behind them is an Iraqi police truck, machine gun on top." Sounds like a more extreme version of riding on redneck roads... |

That scenario occurs more often than you think in third world countries. |

In this case, the stop sign might just be blown up, with an RPG. Anyway, it seems like an extreme version of motorpacing - instead of riding like hell to stay just behind the pace vehicle, those guys have to ride like hell to stay in front of it. -- tanx, Howard Q: Can we call it a quagmire yet? remove YOUR SHOES to reply, ok? |

Imagine what it must have been like 2 years ago when Uday ran the
Olympic committee. He'd probably be the guy manning the machine gun! drmofe@yahoo.com (Stewart Fleming) wrote in message news:<4a1c6b42.0404131715.16e6554c@posting.google.com>... > <http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/news/special_packages/iraq/8236525.htm?1c> > > "No vehicle is safe. Normally I'm the first to jump on the 'rag on Arkansas' bandwagon, but in this case, I can't. I had a number of confrontations involving guns being pulled on me while I lived in South Florida, but cycling in (western) Arkansas is a pretty good deal. At least around here, roads are in pretty good shape and lightly traveled, and I have a 1200ft climb about 15 miles away and a couple of other 2000 ft climbs 30 and 40 miles away. Terrain varies and the roads are seldom in straight unending lines like in Florida. IMO the weather still sucks about 3-4 months out of the year, but then again I won't go out if it's less than 50 degrees. Been there, done that. OTOH, I have no problem riding if the temp goes above 100. The only other problem (cycling-wise) is that although centrally located within the US, nothing seems to be very close so you have to endure lots of driving or flying if you want to do a lot of races. |

While Fort Smith isn't my favorite part of the state, the whole area from Fayeteville (sans Rogers/Bentonville) out to around Eureka Springs and down to the Buffalo National River is simply wonderful. I'd love to get back that way sometime. Still, Arkansas makes for an easy joke....can you blame me? |
