Default Santa Cruz Classic Criterium

When you're done watching the races at the Sea Otter Classic, there's
supposed to be the Santa Cruz Classic Criterium. Supposed to be, that
is... Not much publicity, but for anyone who's interested:

A great race on a unique course. I love that race.

Supposed? It's on. 36th edition, which is a few more than
the Sea Otter AFAIK. Fun to do or watch (the hairpin is a
good spot to hang out, or anywhere on 3rd St), plus you might
see me wearing a stylish orange vest. And trying to keep people
from stepping in front of a speeding motorcycle.

I'll probably be there after the usual Sunday morning mayhem in the
south end of the county. :-)

Did anyone here go to Santa Cruz? If so, will you give a report? Did
42 year old Gavin Chilcott really win the P12 race, after a 15 year
retirement? How was the 35+?

Thanks!

Yes Gavin won but he came out of retirement a couple of years ago.
Richard Meeker won the 35+ 1/2/3 race.

Hard race. Chilcott blasted by McCook for the Vee. Bona-fide stud for
any age. If you don't recognize the name, go to the history books
circa early 80s.

Scott,

Did you ever ride for Reebok/Warren G, or just straight on to 7/Eleven?

I wonder whatever happened to McCook. I remember his absolutely blazing
sprint on that last Oakland race around Lake Merritt in, what, '89? As I
recall he sprinted from the pack to the two leaders who were about 5 seconds
in the lead. I can't remember if he won or not but I do remember standing
there aghast that anyone would accelerate like that.

Since then he doesn't seem to have done much of anything.

I think that's right around the time he met your sister.

I never rode for Warren, though my brother did. I was on 7-Eleven
1985-1990(?) and then Motorola.

Thanks for the report Scott and Casey.

I raced with Gavin as a junior (as did Casey I'm sure) and am aware of
his accomplishments in the 1980s. I talked to him before Sea Otter and
the scary thing is that he says he's not even fit yet! The fact that
he has now come back after such a long layoff reaffirms my belief that
bike racing is an affliction (infection?) that never really goes away,
even after being dormant for a long time ...kind of like herpes.

Anyway, seeing him got me thinking about who are the most notable
riders--men or women, road, track, cx, or MTB--to come out of Northern
California in modern (?) times. IMO LeMond tops any list. Who else?
Bob Roll, George Mount, Jacque Boyer (who also raced Sea Otter masters
btw)? Should Chilcott and McKinley be on the list? Opinions?

Mchook was riding for Prime A. two years ago and fell on a training
ride busting up his knee. This happened like two weeks before US pro
crit. Mchook to RVD. "my knee hurts really bad, I don't know what I
should do, I can barely walk." My response "Damn Dave go to a Doctor
your shit is F'd up". Mchook "I'don't have insurance" My response
"pro bike racer". That lasted the rest of the year and through last
season. He is now riding for what might be the worse pro team ever the
Mcsquirel team.

One other thing. I just got this in my inbox. I almost forgot, but
make of it what you want. This is in regards to Sea Otter. I forgot he
had a new girlfriend who raced.

Craig was riding in the follow vehicle with McGuire Pro rider Dave
McCook who was providing support for the McGuire Women's race.
