Great news everyone! A recumbent has won the 167 mile Bike Across Florida
ride this past weekend. 47 year old John Schlitter rote the 167 mile course in 6:49 setting a course record and outrunning mayn cat 1 and 2 riders that were competing in the ride. John is one of the owners of Bacchetta Bikes and was riding a Bacchetta Aero, a titanium dual 650 recumbent. Here is the story. http://www.chronicleonline.com/arti...news/news01.txt |

In the article, the winner says he wanted to prove the relative efficiency of his recumbent vs. conventional bikes. Of course, he picks the flattest stretch of road on the planet. Lets see how its efficiency stands up at, say, the Assault on Mt. Mitchell or the Six Gap Century or some event like that. He didn't prove anything we didn't know. Recumbents can go fast on the flat. [...] Making her top women's finish even more remarkable is that she's only been riding bikes for about 10 months." |

bill bachelors group would have won if they went down the same course. its
not as flat as you think out in the middle of the state either..... "Ted" <matches@starband.net> wrote in message news:Efthc.2100$FB1.407@fe25.usenetserver.com... > Great news everyone! Woulda, shoulda, coulda
Based on the statement made by the second place finisher,(the recumbent could not climb or sprint good) he should have out sprinted him at the finish. Maybe the recumbent sprinted better than he stated "JTN" <jtn@usps.com> wrote in message news:108d0mtarr0jh0f@corp.supernews.com... > bill bachelors group would have won if they went down the same course. its > not as flat as you think out in the middle of the state either..... > > > "Ted" <matches@starband.net> wrote in message > news:Efthc.2100$FB1.407@fe25.usenetserver.com... > > Great news everyone! Recumbants can get up to and hold a high speed that makes it difficult to
come around. There is also very little draft effect to use in passing. You're comparing Apples and Oranges. Let us know when a recumbant sets the absolute cycling record going up Mt. Washington or Mt. Evans. Recumbents can go fast on > the flat. Duh. This experiment has been run. Long time RBR hacks remember Eric House's 'bent experience. Eric was an ultra-marathoner and used to hold the course record for the Furnace Creek 508. If I remember it correctly he bought a 'bent after a crash in which he broke his collarbone, in order to not disrupt his training. He then rode the recumbent in the Furnace Creek race, a race in which at the time he held the upright record at 29 hours. On the 'bent he established a course record that stood until last year at 35 hours. The race has over 35000 ft of climbing. The difference in his times was almost exactly 6 hours. It's a bit over 6,000 feet, IIRC although the elevation gain isn't that
amount. I'd love to know if there's a recumbent record for the climb. I "woulda" beat him. I probably could have even bunny hopped him at the line
if he didn't get out of my way. maybe even tapped his helmet with my rear whell on the way over to give him a black scratch souvenir. The same way there is no winner of Paris-Brest-Paris.
