Davis Phinney pulled the exact same move at the Coors Classic in 1984 or 1985 when they finished in downtown Truckee California. Phinney was in a break with Hinault and coming into town and Phinney sprinted for the Coors banner. The only problem was that the Coors banner was about 150 meters before the actual Coors finish banner. The story from the people in Truckee was that the first Coors banner was left over from the rodeo that had been in town the week before and never was removed. Phinney was raging at the officals and Hinault !!!! Sprinted to the wrong finish line and then to lose to Hinault whom had set on Phinney's wheel for the last 10k before taking the stage from Phinney. It really was a great couple of years for cycling with the Coors Classic. I never missed any of the stages in California when it was there. If my old memory serves me right the twilight crit in Old Sacramento was part of the Coors race and the course was held on some of the worst cobbled/brick sections you could imagine. Lot's of crashes, Scott Mckinley was racing for the 7/11 team (?) and had a horrific crash into a line of wood posts barriers that had chain between them. It nearly killed the kid ! I don't think he ever was the same since then. "OMC" Memory not what it use to be......... |
