Junior vs U-23 vs Elite

Default Junior vs U-23 vs Elite

Anybody know how the destinction is drawn for U-23's by the UCI?
What's the histroy of that destiction? Came up on another forum I Haunt.

U-23, formerly espoire, was instituted to replace "amatuer" racing and
provide a clear step for juniors to take upon entering the senior
ranks. They more or less did away with amatuer elite racing to form
(in most euro countries) Elite pro racing and elites w/o contracts.
U-23's have their own special calendar of racing and the age range is
from 19-22 (juniors can't compete in UCI U-23 races) and juniors are
U-19, though UCI races limit participation to 17-18 juniors.
