Default Giro Stage Wins by Americans

Add Freddy to the rather short list. As I recall the only others are
Keifel, Lemond and Hampsten. (I may be wrong about Lemond but I think
he won a timetrial at some point).

1985 Ron Kiefel, stage 15
1985 Andy Hampsten, stage 20
1986 Greg Lemond, stage 5
1988 Andy Hampsten, stage 12
1988 Andy Hampsten, stage 18
2002 Tyler Hamilton, stage 14

Trivia question: Of Andy Hampsten's three stage wins, which was the famous
victory over the Gavia Pass in the snow?

Ewoud has provided the answer on several occasions, this is just a check
to make sure you guys are paying attention.

?????????
I know that you yankees like to take possession of things that are not
yours, but AH didn't win that stage, Erik Breukink did.

None. He was second to Brukink on that stage and went over the pass in
second place as well but the first place climber was too cold to continue. I
believe that Bob Roll finished 7th on that stage as well.

He effectively gained his victory for the Giro GC on that stage.

OK, how about this one.

Lots of people know Greg Lemond won the final time trial in
the 1989 Tour over Fignon by 58 seconds. What was his margin of
victory over the second placed rider at the Lac de Vassivi?re
time trial in 1990 where he took the yellow jersey from
Chiapucci?

0.00 seconds ... LeMond WAS the 2nd place finisher at the Lac de Vassivière
time trial.

Remember, if you didn't pay close enough attention first time around, it
is not permitted to use Google.

none -- he didn't win the stage; Eric Breukink (sp?) of the Netherlands won
it.

Curious isn't it.

Two times an American took first place in a major stage race, both times
coming in 2nd on the stage to the same man, Eric Breukink:

Andy Hampsten in the stage over the Gavia Pass
Greg LeMond in the Lac de Vassiviere time trial in the TdF.
