Exclamation I need advice on a starter bike!!!

Here's the deal.I'm just starting out in "real" cycling, and I need a decent starter. My budget is about $1000 or less hopefully.I've looked at the Giant and Trek, but I am not well versed in the components and gear,so any help in this area would be great.
I reside in B.C.,so I would need a hill climber, and something somewhat upgradeable.

Thanks Guys!!

I just went through the same process. Others can give you more experienced advice, but in addition to the Giant and Trek, I also looked at Kona, Devinci and Oryx. KHS Flite is also mentioned in this range, but I couldn't find a local retailer. Components tended to be Shimano Sora in this range. I went with the Oryx partly because it had Shimano Tiagra, which friends told me was better. The Kona was a beautiful bike, by the way, but I just couldn't get comfortable on it.

I highly recommend looking for a USED bike. You get better value for your dollar.

I recently found my GF a 2001 Giant TCR 2 w. Full Ultegra, and Dura-Ace Groupo , Reynolds Ouzo full carbon forks for $920. To buy a bike with these componants new would cost 2500+

Check the classifieds at www.pinkbike.com for great local deals.

The componants ranges from super cheap, to extremely expensive. The difference between Ultegra and Dura-Ace is minumal, but the price tag is not.

I recommend finding a bike with Shimano 105 componants, it is the best of both worlds, great value for your money.

The Shimano Group Sets from Cheapest to Most Expensive are as follows : Sora : Tiagara : 105 : Ultegra : Dura Ace

Hope this helps

You may wish to upgrade in the future but realize that many times the cost of upgrading to a new set of components costs almost as much as you paid for the bike. Like cars many bikes are worht far more as parts than the whole, so try to get the best you can afford of the bat (either new or used and there is nothing at all wrong with a used bike in good condition).

Check out www.performancebike.com or www.supergo.com. You can get some good bikes for under $1000.
If you want to work with a Local Bike Shop (which I would always recommend if the price is similar), check out the KHS Flite 700. If you have a dealer in your area, it is a screaming deal. It is around $1000, around 18-19 pounds, and very upgradable.

Hmmmm......good advice. I`d add that heading into the winter months you can usually snag some good bikes on sale. Especially after Christmas when the shops are getting the 2005 model bikes on the floor.

The only problem is getting the right size as last years`s inventories are getting low. That said if you find a bike in your size you can really make off like a bandit.

I bought a new 2001 bike in February of 2002 and for about $150 more I jumped from a Tiagra/105 housebrand components (bar/stem/seatpost) 2002 model to a 105/ultegra/namebrand (bar/stem/seatpost) 2001 model. Better wheelset and frame on the 2001 as well. It was a well spent extra $150.

In my case the shop was getting in the 2002 models and needed the floorspace plus they were no longer carrying the brand(i bought) so they really wanted to clear the remaining bikes out.

Head to all the local shops and check out their inventories. You just never know what 2004 gem you might discover. Go Tiagra or better. In terms of upgrading Sora is an 8 speed while Tiagra,105 and Ultegra are 9 speed. Dura Ace is either 9 or 10 speed. As a result upgrading Sora is MORE expensive.

Good luck and good hunting. Here is a website where you can do some research and check out consumer reviews.......
