i have an old 10 speed. i have 2 front sprockets & 5 rear sprockets. when the chain is on the large front sprocket, i can't get it to shift to the small front sprocket when the chain is on the smallest or second smallest rear sprocket. it tends to get stuck in the middle. when the chain is riding on the largest, or second largest, or third largest rear sprocket, then it downwhifts to the small front sprocket easily. the derailers are adjusted & work fine. does the chain angle has a lot to do with this? is this a normal condition?

That's not normal. Although conventional wisdom says cross chaining will cause premature wear on your drive train, you should be able to run all the way up and down the rear cassette on either front chain ring and shift from either chain ring to the other from anywhere on the rear cassette.
Sounds like something either needs a good scrubbing or needs to be replaced. |
