Will this combination work together at least ok, or is buying a new 9 speed DA rear derailleur a must?

It worked for me.
I have 9 speed ultegra shifters and 8speed dura-ace derailleur on my spare bike. I replaced the derailleur wheels with 9-speed wheels and it works fine.
