Chamois creams used to be made specifically for this purpose. You might want to do a little research with the different brands to see if any of them still recommend use on leather. You might start with Assos. You'll probably want something with a bit of lanolin or grease component rather than strictly water-based.
I like Chamois Butt'r but don't use leather chamois any longer. I doubt that it would work the way the old chamois creams did as it is water based. |

Just out of curiosity I checked Kucharik's website. They still make shorts with leather chamois and sell a cream for use with the leather.
I don't know where you are planet-wise, but give them a try. http://www.kucharik.com/access.htm |

Thanks for the help, l will have to experiment, but was more worried about chemicals causing problems eg rash etc. So just on chamois material, how good are the synthetic threads used ? (l only own one other pr of knicks;sugo womens knicks @ spandex + nylon l dont know what the chamois is made from ) Threadless/Seamless Gel padded knicks would be nice for long distance! |

Unless you are unusual the creams should be fine. They are formulated for use in the nether regions.
Regarding synthetic chamois, I far prefer them over leather. For long distance, PI's PRT and 3-D chamois, and Castelli's are excellent. If you are mtnbiking and want something a little thinner (no dreaded saddle short suck), I like Shebeest's upper level shorts. Check out Team Estrogen's web site (or their forum) for good info. The molded seamless chamois are best. The ones I don't like, while seamless, are the ones that don't have varying thickness and the fabric appears to be a sort of synthetic flannel. It looks brushed. It is useless for absorbing and wicking. Usually these are the less expensive shorts or made for spinning class when you aren't on a bike for several hours. Good luck! |
