I will be riding mostly in the south bay at Almaden Quicksilver as well as at some of the preserves on the pensinsula/along Skyline Blvd. I'm interested in cruising up and down the fire roads, mostly, though I do want to get on some of the Wilder, Nisene Marks, Soquel Demonstration etc. singletrack that people seem to rave about.
This will be just recreational riding. I will actually be using this bike as a means of cross training with running and as such I want to use it as a means of getting a good cardio workout without subjecting my body to the high impact of running. Since I'm buying this bike to make it rather than my body (feet, knees) bear the impact of riding, esp when going downhill, I'm leaning toward a FS bike. I'm wondering if it will be very much more impact absorbing on fire roads, though, than a HT bike; will it be much more beneficial? |

For the kind of riding you describe, I'd recommend a hardtail.
