Default Upgrade from 7 to 9

I've recently purchased new rims with a deore xt rear hub. And I'm using a spacer to keep my 7 speed cassette. I am considering upgrading to 9 speed some time in the new year. The question is do I need to replace my front derailleur and cranks. Or would they work with the narrower 9 speed chain.

no, they won't work. 9 speed chains and rings are much narrower, you'll need tp upgrade the whole drivetrail to make sure you get compatible parts and proper shifting.

I figured as much, oh well. It would be nice to upgrade but unless i find a great deal on parts on Ebay I will not bother, the seven speed works at least

The odds are very good that you'd be able to keep your old cranks at least. 9-spd chain IS narrower, but it shouldn't be enough to worry the crank. Shifting MIGHT be a problem because your FD is probably a bit wider than actually needed, you might get sloppy shifting or chain rub.
