Not a very intelligent thread but here goes!
If you guys were riding up, say, a mile of pretty steep hilly road, what sort of speed would you be doing? Say on an average ride/training what would be a good speed? I got sick again the past few weeks and was off the road. I seem to be incapable of making much progress but that is probably largely through my own laziness. I always know that Im mostly that little bit slow for it to be easy, to be gliding along. Perhaps this month will be the month. I want to buy myself that road bike! Excuse the rant, BadBreaks |

For a mile I can do about 15 miles an hour with a grade of 7%.
Just take it easy on the bike, being sick and all right now. It's only January and the best training months are still ahead of you. I'm riding just enough to hold onto the fitness I've got and I've lost some of it since last summer. The main thing is to keep from losing too much...if that can be done, you're fine. |

I dont know what the grade is but its about two miles and if I try I can hold 16.5-17.0 MPH.

i got this 1 hill that is massive....its only 1km long but gets very very steep...so steep u blow up if u stay in the saddle cause u cant get in a low enough gear. I try to do it 4 times (twice a day) a week and since i started doing it i've seen BIG improvments in my climbing skills.
heres a tip: when your going up steep hills, in your lowest gear (lowest being on the middle chainring and biggest sprocket ) and still have a very low cadence, dont shift to the small ring! (thats if u have a triple like myself) , just shift up a gear or 2, get out of the saddle, and when you feel you have enough momentum shift back down. Thats how you can keep a high cadence on thos really steep hills. |

Well... I do hill repeats at a 12%+ grade and manage about 14mph - it's about .7-.8 miles but I do it over and over.
I don't really know what you mean by a "hill", but there's one hill where I can have my heart rate up past 200bpm and only be at 12mph. It depends on the steepness and length of the climb. |

Wow, those seem pretty quick for uphill - I have real problems on hills. there is one in my town that I go up at about 7-8 mph, under half a mile long, but that's pretty steep! I live in the fens anyway, so Hills are a bit rare - only the one massive ridge 4 miles away, I'd have to go about 30 miles to get onto the wolds - the nearest hills, so I'm not too good on hills - Need a bit of practice on them.

14 up a twelve percent grade? HOly crap. You know what kind of wattage you put out? How fast can you go on the flats? |

Ya thats freaky for a cadet/junior to keep that pace! Let me ask you, are you just a natural strong climber or what the hell was your hill training like? I really want to work on building my climbing skills and it would be interesting to see some other training methods. Like do you aerobic up for training or anaerobic, and what percentage of max if any?

I tried going up my big hill on my middle chainring as someone suggested earlier - my speed doubled! (I had ben before using my smallest) I shall definatkly be trying that again, although i need some practice at the bit where it turns a corner and goes steeper! I justr changed back down - which made it worse! cheers for that advice.
