I think he may retire directly after this years tour. I am compelled to believe that his sponsor has too much investment involved to let him go before the big show.

I would tend to agree but if this were the case; why wouldn't he wait until after the TdF to make his announcement? Strange. |

No, LA not retire before this year's Tour. He has committed to riding one more tour, in his contract with Discovery Channel. He will announce that, regardless of whether he wins this year's Tour or not (which he will ride), he is not going for next year's Tour or any subsequent Tours.
He wants to announce before the Tour 2005 because (i) if he ends up losing the Tour (unlikely), nobody will say he retired because he was afraid of retrying to win in 2006, and (ii) if he wins the Tour, people will not expect him to try for eight. He will not retire. He will try for things like the hour record. |

Excellent post. Another idea floated elsewhere is that since his Tour motivation seems a bit lacking (compared to previous years according to his comment) maybe he is going to try the Giro/Tour double. Interesting idea. My thought is that maybe Discovery is going to launch a sports channell with some ccycling shows. |

and since he has just gone to the magistrate in Italy and told him the 'truth' (as he sees it) about the Simeoni incident - the one thing that, according to his great friend Verbruggen, was stopping him riding the Giro - then what's to stop him going for a surprise double? Maybe that's what he'll announce before TdG. |

Since we have all agreed in this forum that the overwhelming evidence points that Lance is a drugfree professional cyclist, I believe the anouncement will concern the attempt on the Hour or the Giro ....... And since the news has broken that he has met with Italian officials , he is probably going to attempt a TDF/Giro double ......
My beliefs are based on this ......... Lance runs on motivation ..... Lance has won "MORE" TDF's then any other rider.... The TDF is a extremely difficult thing ,and Lance needs to reach new "Lance-like Goals." The man already has beaten death , been WORLD CHAMP, won 6 TDF's, lives in Texas, and has a super hot rock star babe....... What more is there???? Maybe Lance thinks it would be cool to take a bike ride around Italy soon with a few of his mates, enjoying great food and wine , and having Discovery pick up the tab ...... |

I think it's quite possible that LA will announce this is his last TdF. I would be shocked if he didn't compete this year as he probably has some significant commitments to Discovery to do so.
I would also be quite suprised if he announced he is going for a Giro/ TdF double as his recent comments lead you to believe he is tired of being away from his family so much. Trying for a double would only make this worse. Of course he may decide that he is riding the Giro instead of the TdF. Time will tell. I just am hoping to get to see him in the TdF 1 last time.
