Women of Canadian cycling, for more than decade you have been some of the few bright spots in our sport. Your efforts have brought recognition to the sport and financial windfalls for the Canadian Cycling Association (CCA). Your events now represent most of international ones we have and they are best-organized, highest profile with the most media coverage.
Despite all this success and your importance in our competitive results you have almost no say whatsoever in the management or organization of cycling in our country. Take a look at this list of association presidents below, there is not one woman elected to head a cycling federation or association in Canada. There is only one woman Executive Director. Of the 22 positions listed below there is only one woman. This has to change. It can and should change now. As the Canadian domestic cycling season begins you should go out on the roads, trails and tracks to spread the message and make your wishes known. You should work to elect Lesley Tomlinson as the next CCA President. Ms. Tomlinson is the most qualified and best placed woman to run the CCA. She is very electable but she needs widespread support to counter the the lack of transparency in the current voting process.. Do not let the good ol' boys make another backroom deal and give us a President for another three years who will do nothing but offer excuses, as has current President Bill Kinash. Remember this is a guy who could not even be bothered to telephone the woman who won an Olympic Gold Medal for two months. Lori Ann Muenzer had some strong words regarding the CCA and its inaction. Her candor was refreshing. Let’s hope Ms. Muenzer and Ms. Premont, Sydor, Bessette, Jeanson, Palmer, Poitras and all the other women leading pelotons across the country and the world will let their voices be heard. Contact your associations and their Presidents. They are the people with the votes to elect the next President. Hold them accountable. We need some changes. You need some changes. You have a unique opportunity to do something about this now. Get it done! Provincial Cycling Association Presidents 1. Harris, Tim / Chair President, ABA 2.
