Becoming almost an annual thing with a few mates, we’re looking at shooting down to Sorrento & back from Melbourne (aprox 200kms). Done it previously on my 27spd Specialised Stumpjumper MTB running semi-slickies no problem, as well as 3x ‘Round the Bay rides (210kms).
They’re really into this sort of thing now (riding on the road) as they all have upgraded (side-graded) to roadies where I’ve hung with the trustworth, dependable & flexible MTB. Thing is, this year the Stumpjumer has been wearing the full knobbies lately & used predominately offroad doing the Dirt Crits @ Westgate & single track about the place carry around 4months of aged dust & encrusted mud. But I’ve also got my old hack chromoly, rigid Apollo MTB with street tyres for commuting, it’s a single spd convert (44/18) and being the masicest that I am, I’m thinking of doing the ride down on the Apollo s/spd. The ratio on the Apollo (44/18) sits nicely on 27kms/hr with it also being low enough to take uphills pretty easy, but those down to Sorrento – Olivers Hill & Mt Martha might pop a seam or 2. Sure I can always just hose down the Stumpjumper & swap the tyres but it still might be hard for me to match their ‘peleton-hugging’ speeds & really where’s the challenge in clocking up triple digits sitting on someones wheel? You think I’m looking a causing a personal injury with this stunt? Anyone ride down there from Melbourne on the one cog? |
