Today, while riding I found a nice suburban road that was fairly empty. The problem was that I was getting slowed by a series of regular speed bumps that were installed on the road. Apparently this empty road is inviting to speed demon drivers and the residents decided they wanted to slow them down. While slowing as I approached one of many, I heard the telltale sounds of another cyclist overtaking me at a brisk pace. He was approaching the bumps and at the last minute, jumping to make his wheels clear the bumps. I wanted to try to do this as well, but figured I should practice on a clear area so that I don't kill myself or bend a rim on one of the bumps.
Are there any hints on how to do this without killing myself and damaging my ride? I guess part of this is motivated by the fact that I hate being passed on the road by another rider. ![]() |

I cheat by using my SPDs. I never could get the hang of it before I could them, but with SPDs you just push off the bike into the air and it goes with you.
Don't know what sort of humps they are making you slow down though... all the ones around here I just ride over at full speed, or if I'm feeling energentic use the hump itself as the jump ![]() |

I ride through a section of neighborhood with these too. Some of the time, I can edge around them near the curb. For me their height isn't a problem. You definitely can learn to bunny hop them as long as the road humps aren't too deep. On the really deep ones, I will just raise my front wheel and stand up out of the saddle letting my back wheel make contact just as I am coming down through the back half of the bunnyhop. That is a better approach for me when the road is wet.
