£280 to spend - on what road bike?
I have about £280 to spend including P&P and have seen the following 2 options.
Advice on the best please. Decathlon Store - 7.1 for £259.99 viewable only on the french website .fr or... Barracuda Azzuri on a certain 'discountbicycles' uk website for £279.99 delivered. I can't try the Azzuri for fit, whereas the Decathlon I can, and it has 2 years on parts, 5 years on frame. Any other models and places to find them would be gratefully received. I'm replacing an old Decathlon 7.1, so want a road bike (a proper bike as I call it).  |

buy secondhand, disregard guarantees like that, if you travel more than a couple of thousand miles in 2 years, you can expect even the best components to need some replacement parts. try racingbiketrader via the deeside website, or ebay, if you feeel very lucky & brave.

there are lots of threads about how to get burned on ebay. the easiest way seems to be to buy from zero feedback sellers! I'd go for someone who's been selling bikes on ebay for a while.

Simple advice - buy second hand - it is easily the best option - NEVER buy from a 'Discount Warehouse' it's compromised gear - buy second habd and the worst you are going to get is a bike that was once someone's 'best' bike that has served a bit of time as a training bike and now has to make way for a new training bike - it all starts with someone else getting a new 'best' bike.
Try 'Cycling Weekly' or a Bike Jumble - someone who is 'retiring' is usually a good bet - shiny new bikes cost a fortune; be patient with your cash - you will get a bargain - just wait. I have 4 bikes, the nearest the door is a Marin mountian bike that is about 100 years old - a bike that lives on the turbo trainer - an old best bike, and two bike that I train / race on. Good luck. Here's a tip: There is a bike shop in Pagham, west Sussux - called Maestro - go and see him - in person if you can - the man is a genius, his son was a pro, his other son will be a pro - he does good frame deals, if you have the bits for it.... I know lots of bike riders, and if you are interested, and live near the South of England you WILL pick up a road bike for your asking price - I guarantee it! |

NW of England, so bit far to travel to the Sth - I've ordered a new Decathlon 7.2, coz got fed up of trawling and not finding anyhting in price range - seems as thought you can buy old for nexct to nothing, or spend £500 on someones last year model.
I know I can get more 2nd hand, but it did have £50 knocked off the price. |

You probably bought your bike by now.. I would recommend a Hybrid with more road bike ride than not..
Best value for that price is the Specialized Sirrius which can be had for a 10% discount at Evans Cycles with an LCC card.. which brings its price down from 299 to 260... If you use it to commute its awesome..got Armadillo tires as well. I used to buy used but found New bikes to be much better value since I commute to London.. Quote:
