Default Rear Mech

I'd like you know if it's possible to change a rear mech (6 speed) for a beefer mech as the one i have.. i'm going to change

That is if a 7/8 speed mech will work

I'm not sure if all the rear mech's are universal with the later mtb

Please could someone help me out thanks
newbie

In general there's very little difference between RD's, as long as you stay clear of the rapid-rise version there's a very good chance that it will work.
