Default how to use power readings?

I'm thinking of getting a Tacx Flow ergometer for training. It won't be as expensive as the the power meters installed on bikes but I think (IMO) it will serve better since it will be used in a controlled environment. Anyway, how do you guys use this meter? Do you ride for a certain amount of time while keeping the power constant? Any thoughts on the way to take advantage of a power meter will be helpful. Thanks
