M4 cycleway?

I normally try to cycle-commute to work, but currently working at Westmead (and living in the inner west of Sydney). Driving to work along the M4 I've noticed a newly constructed cycleway that parallels/crosses under the M4 from around Silverwater Rd and out past Westmead. Does anyone use this cycleway, and can they tell me more about it? I.e. where exactly does it start, is it continuous, what's it like at night etc. From where I live I have the luxury of the Cook's river cycleway out to Rookwood cemetry and if this cycleway exists it would complete the route nicely!!! Thanks!

Cool. You'll have to let us know how it goes. Since recently (last 2 or 3 months) returning to cycling i've been keen on trying various rides around Sydney. My wife bought me a book on rides around Sydney and a neighbour who also cycles loaned me another one. Now I just need to make the time to try some of the rides.

From Newington/Olympic Park, take the south-west end of Louis Savage Pathway from John Ian Wing Parade - dips under the M4 and brings you out on the eastern end of Adderly St East. Cross Silverwater Rd to Adderly St West.

Join M4 Cylcleway crossing Junction Street - goes over Duck Creek, along Matha St, Over James Ruse Drive via Cycleway beside RTA Motor Cycle Rider Training Centre.

M4 Cycleway continues under Viaduct of M4. Various exits to streets in Granville, and Harris Park and to Parramatta.

Cycleway goes under Railway and Church St bringing you out at eastern end of Holroyd Sports Ground.

Cycle Way intersection here to double back to to church street and right to Parramatta-Liverpool Rail Trail, or Left up the M4 towards Westmead.

East from Westmead (Hawkesbury Road) along M4 - exits hard left through gate to Fox St underpass then left past Holroyd Sports Ground.

Alternative via Parramatta and Parramatta Park or back roads between the M4 and Great Western Highway(can't help you much here, though)

Excellant- sounds good! Thanks for your efforts in writing that description. Might see you out there cycling. Sounds like I should be able to complete most of the journey on cycleway now!

it is a pretty good route...

I use it on sunny hot days cause cycling under the freeway is so much cooler

this is despite the fact that i commute Eastwood-Parra

it is also less hilly than the Parra Valley Cycleway which is currently under further construction/renovation

down the east side of the eastwood station,

then cross under the track and ride down thru darvall park

down anthony rd

go into west ryde crossing at chatham rd

right at victoria rd

past maccas west ryde

down past a public school on the left.... near shell

right at the end

left onto adelaide st

all the way down to the netball courts in meadowbank park

up along the PVC

come out @ south st rydalmere

over the railway bridge

left into UWS... keeping left

under silverwater rd

down thomas st

stop off at a coffee @ the octagon

and into work across the rd on george st

Glad I read this,

I was using the Victoria Rd fly-over James Ruse Dr.

Man, that can get a bit hairy west bound. (Eastbound is pretty cool)

Tomorrow, I'll try to find my way through the UWS site.

just turn into UWS at the lights & stay left.... follow the road next to the train line until you come to the roundabout... go up the hill slightly

turn left off the road onto the rocky dirt driveway that goes around the house on the hill

go under James Ruse Drive... and after a steep steep pinch, it spits you out at Thomas St...

Not likely though as I'm going the other way. I live in Parramatta and head along the river via Homebush Bay to Strathfield. It's a little longer (16 km each way) than the M4 - Parramatta Rd route (14 km) but it is as flat as a pancake (apart from Rydlemere and the Silverwater Rd Bridge - even those are not much more than speed bumps (unless it's cold, wet, I'm tired and it's windy - then they are the alps) ). It is also far more relaxing, scenic and idiots along Parramatta Rd are not an issue.

I like the flat route as I'm only a few weeks into getting back into this cycle commuting thing so, I'm still horribly out of shape and will probably miss out on winning a mountain stage in next year's Tour De France.

I'm a tall, white guy (thirty-something) on an old reish Giant Yukon. Struggling along at about 20 or so Ks.

PS, any reason you don't use Kissing Point Road (ie the more direct route)?
