Bike Courier, Melbourne

I think this thread have been attempted twice before. I have read them though they haven't really told me the details I need.

I read in The Age about the Bike Courier work, and I expressed immediate interests.
I know that Toll would be employing bike couriers, but I like to know if there are other companies as well and their details. I am keen on this job, been unemployed for a while, so pretty desperate and I think this job is pretty cool. Don't care about the weather really. (I cycled in awful Dutch weather for 6 years, so surely can handle Melbie weather ) and I bet some of you would 'cheat' by taking the train from city to nearest station of the destintation to skip most of the bad weather yes?

If any of you are bike couriers, pls do share experiences

I have a Trek MTB (4100) need it for my size (6'5.5"). I am also curious about the requirement. I mean I noticed in the photo, that one of the courier is wearing a talkie radio....I am deaf, so i hope that wouldn't be a problem as sms can do the job.

Any advice, tips and referencing would be appreciated.

I'm also interested in doing bike courier work for a while in Melbourne. Have a decent part time job at the moment, but I reckon it'd be interesting to do for a while.

I don't finish year 12 until november then, so I figured I'd look into it then. The long thread in the archive here has a fair bit of info though.

As an ex-pushbike courier in Melb I can recommend the following companies:

1. Minuteman Messengers
2. Dart Couriers
3. Snap Express

If you're on the ball with these companies you will turn over some serious cash.

Would be surprised if there were many trips you could catch a train to beat the weather. Melbourne CBD seems to be the main focus of courier work so this seems unlikely.

I would think think that if you were 'keen on this job' you would have pulled out the yellow pages and spoken to all of the companies that do this in melbourne.

May also be worth talking to your centre link contact as the company may get additional benefits in starting to employing you if you are deaf.

Thanks for that. And may I ask if you would have any idea regarding the technology.

I am deaf, and unable to use a radio, so I am wondering if it is possible for alternatives, such as mobile (sms) or pagers...

I know the companies I mentioned rely heavily on 2-way radio communications. As such, having a hearing deficiency may present a problem. However, still worth giving them a shot. Most companies also use paging systems and I'm sure they'd utilise other mobile communications by now.

It may also be worth giving Z Couriers, Quebec Couriers, and DX a call. DX actually own Minuteman and Dart these days. These companies have daily "bulk" runs which may well be suited to you.

Mate, I must thank you a lot for referring Z Courier to me.

I applied for the job, they gave me a shot, which I started on monday, doing the bulk mail, apparently I impressed them which I personally thought i did rather badly (got wrong directed few times, lost time looking for the place, Damn Crown Casino's mailroom)

Anyway, so they tested me in the afternoon with exclusive delivery couriers. I did the job well... So instead of just mondays and maybe wed/fri, they asked me to work on tues, I did the job on tues well, wed, and today..and tmw (fri) becoming full timer

They are very happy with me, I exceeded their expectations of me, I am using the PDA for messaging and reading the addresses for pickup/drop.

I personally think I am still alrighty.. but to them "I am as good as the other couriers".

So I am very happy with this job, I love it, cycling all day, rain doesn't bother me...

thanks again for saving my life. ( I am serious, I would be in depression, searching for jobs, being bored!)

Why are so many bike couriers such aggressive pigs, especially when they are weaving through pedestrians on footpaths?

The Sydney ones seem pretty courteous. I think that they all wear their employers' jerseys, so that ought to be enough to make them behave.

That sounds ok - many of the Melbourne ones have no apparent ID, company logo etc. I assume that is a deliberate tactic to avoid being dobbed for their often crappy behaviour.

I have work all over melbournes cbd and totally respect bike couriers.

They weave in and out like mad men BUT as long as your standing your ground they wont touch you... thats experience !!!
