Noticed the City of Stonnington is seeking comment from the local community regarding its draft bicycle strategy. For those who use the roads and cycle paths of the city the draft plan may be of interest. Its the first I have noticed that is actively seeking feedback from the groups who will use the facilities. The more people who comment the better I suspect for getting the council to focus on the projects which will get more people on their bikes in safety.

Their on-line form for submitting input asks about obstacles to you using your bike more often, but choices only include things like "need more bike routes". Nowhere is there a choice that says something like "I'd use my bike more often if I didn't feel like I was continually in danger of being hit by a car or run off the road by a yabbo". Or, "I'd ride more often if I wan't so lazy". ![]() S |

Be careful here, one of our local Councils in WA is doing similar, including introducing speed limits.
We already have one local authority with a 10k limit on all bike paths and 40k limit on all roads. They enforce it with their own ranger and radar gun!!! ![]()

err, thx for the correction. During my 2-wk stay in Melbourne (during which I cycle-commuted every day, and even did a modified Around the Bay in a Day starting from Geelong), I did not get a chance to see the word yobbo in print. About the speed-limits issue, this is a tough one. On narrower paths, it isn't appropriate for bikes to be travelling significantly faster than pedestrians since the latter feel unsafe when bikes whiz by at close quarters. Here in Calgary, the entire bike trail system (more than 500km) is posted with a 20 km/h limit. And in constricted areas (bridge approaches and the like) there is a 10 km/h limit. And yes, city bylaw officers with radar guns do hide out there occasionally - though they are quite lenient with the speed limit since bikes are not required to have speedometers (e.g. they will ticket you if you are doing over 20 in a 10 zone, or over 30 in a 20 zone). Stonnington's work on the space required by cyclists and pedestrians is innovative. Using that as a base, it should be possible to say, for instance, that paths wider than 2.5m should have no speed limit for bikes, while narrower paths need to have a limit (or perhaps the wider paths need a limit of 30 km/h, and narrower ones 20). If you want to ride a road bike at high speed, perhaps the road is the best place to do it. In fact I do see that taking place along Footscray Road. |
