Hi all
I guess I know the answer to this one already but wanted a second opinion. Tried to do my 4 X 10 mins @ threshold power this moring (on trainer) but could not get HR above 145 (threshold 177) and power sat at 30-40W lower than threshold. RPE and breathing indicated that the intensity was as high as I could manage but just could not move power or HR up consistently. I had a tough week last week and ended with a 160km race into a headwind on Sunday. Having taken Moday as a rest day and with morning resting HR back to normal today I thought I would be fine. Am I just still tired from the race effort on Sunday ? Thanks Peter |

Yes, you're clearly still tired...and I'll bet that your TSS from Sunday would have predicted it. ![]() |

Thanks Andy - TSS was 294 so i thought Id give it a go but guess there was just too much residual fatigue. The race was into strong head and cross winds and i rode the last 100km with only one other rider.
Can I have another go at the intervals tomorrow or should I wait until Thurs with a recovery ride tomorrow ? Cheers Peter |

That's a tough call based on such limited information, but one factor that may influence your decision is where you stand in your season/what you have on tap in the immediate future. For example, if you're currently focussed on just racing and recovering, then waiting until Thursday would be the safe bet. OTOH, if you're currently trying to build/rebuild fitness for some late season goals, then you might need to "train through" a bit of residual fatigue. Of course, the easiest thing to do is to give 'em another go, and see how you feel...if you're not adequately recovered, I'm sure you'll know it! |

Thanks for the feedback Andy. I am just out of base and into build getting ready for a tough 5 day stage race at beginning of Sept so am looking for a bit of overload !
Will give them another go tomorrow - I dont mind the fatigue and subsequent lower numbers but was concerned that if I am not in either correct power or HR zone then i am not getting the training effect anyway and so better to stop session. Cheers and thanks again for the help Peter |
