Great work, Patrick, in case anyone missed this in the news a few days ago, I too can contribute. Who else is with me?:
$1,000 bursary to be offered in support of cycling project; sponsor calls for matching donations from companies, individuals I’m happy to announce that I’ll be offering a small bursary to assist in financing a cycling-related project to be proposed by members of the Canadian cycling community. The modest bursary will begin at $1,000 but is expected to grow to more by the end of the season, and is designed to assist in financing a project or need that is planned for the 2006 season. My involvement in cycling journalism began almost two decades ago, and I simply can’t quantify the contribution that the sport has made to my life. While I continue to enjoy writing about the sport I would much rather see the proceeds of that work go to help fund a project that otherwise would go without sponsorship. Those interested in applying for the amount are invited to send a short description of the project or need towards which the bursary funds would be applied. The bursary is open to any project in cycling – men, women or youth, and across all cycling disciplines. Applications can be posted on the Pedal online forum, or e-mailed to me at patrick(a)vdwconsulting.com. If you’d like to contact me directly you can call me at (312) 882-1205. I’d also like to call on companies and individuals who’ve benefited from cycling to contribute additional funds or services – and depending on the projects that are proposed to me, I may do some reaching out of my own. Most of our elite athletes already receive a level of sponsorship and services that enable them to train and compete effectively, but I’m convinced there are a number of projects out there that could see a tremendous benefit from a small amount of support – amounts that are feasible contributions for myself and others who’ve similarly benefited from cycling. Those interested can contact me at the coordinates listed above. |

Note how Van de Wille has once again disappeared from the scene? He is not here, on Pedal nor CC.
The leech smelled a contract for marketing consulting but when it fell through he bolted. Typical. This guy has given nothing back the sport. He is simply an opportunist. |

So where does this stand?
Has Van de Wille given a dime out to any recipient yet or was it all just more hot air? |

This is what he said he did with it:
From: Patrick Van de Wille [mailto atrick@vdwconsulting.com] Sent: Monday, July 24, 2006 3:37 PM LOL - did you forget to cc anyone? The funds were disbursed, and if you qualified the bursary as a no-big-deal situation a year ago I find it disappointing that you would try to make a big deal out of it now. At first the money was given to Hurricane Katrina relief, given it represented a more timely interest here in the US. Since then, the money was re-accumulated and split into three donations. In all cases, we were able to use the small amount I was giving as a lynchpin to "involve local interests" (ie: shaming local chambers of commerce and social organizations like the Optimists) with matching bids, etc., and as a result we were able to multiple several-fold the money allocated to some projects. They are all tiny projects - in two cases, simple travel money for deserving athletes (I have requested the name(s) of these athletes. If anybody knows of any cyclist getting a dime from Van de Wille please let me know!)- but I'm unable to do more( how true!!). I see some names on this cc list I haven't seen in a while. I have a tough time thinking this would interest you much, but if that's the case please do feel free to contact me. Best regards. Meilleures salutations. -P _______________________ Patrick Van de Wille +1 312-882-1205 patrick@vdwconsulting.com From: Ed Arzouian [mailto:edatarzouian.com] Sent: Monday, July 24, 2006 1:54 PM Subject: Where's the bursary? It has been a year since Patrick Van de Wille told the world he was offering a bursary for Canadian cycling (see below). He (and others for him) made a lot of noise about offering it but we have not heard anything about somebody getting it? Does anybody know if Van de Wille actually made good on this promise? According to Van de Wille he, “simply can’t quantify the contribution that the sport has made to my life.” Apparently the sport cannot quantify what contribution he has made to it either! If anybody has heard of anybody getting the Van de Wille bursary, by all means let us know….. Last edited by Eddie Arzouian : 25-07.-2006 at 05:49 AM. |

So, Uboat, what do you think of the big Van de Wille Bursary? He says he gave the money to Katrina relief and paid a trip for one 9-year old kid some place.
Van de Wille wrote me: "Why - so you can check up on them? A triathlete/cyclist in BC that I got Optimists and a tourism association to triple up my donation on, a 9-year-old BMXer in central Quebec, one of whose parents is a teacher and one is on unemployment, and they needed to get to Eastern Canadian championships and pay for hotel, etc., and I got local Optimists to double my contribution. Plus a small project in rural Ontario that was hoping to do something, and I gave them money for shirts and got them an equipment sponsor, but not much panned out of that one." (boy, there's a surprise...!) Non-specifics and bullshit. Who was the triathlete?????? Where did he/she go? Who is the nine-year old? "A small project in rural Ontario". Are there any other kind? |

This may quite possibly be the most ridiculous post/thread you've ever done. Stop before you embarass yourself further.

Do you think Van de Wille has any proof about donating money to Katrina? How does that help Canadian cycling? Don't you think a "media" guy like Van de Wille would be mentioning his generosity a lot more to encourage others to do the same? Why the secrecy? After all, he claim he did this to get others invovled. How can they get involved if he doesn't publicize it? Of course, how can we verifiy anything he has written, as well? Wouldn't those that benefited from his bursary want to thank him publicly? Hey Uboat, how is that Pedal Magazine Forum doing? Post there much!!!! |

Ed,
Cycling bursaries often take some time to get going and in some cases do not see the expected results until much later. Here is a link to a local Canadian bursary that has been run for the past 7 years. http://seenite.org/bursary.htm The recipients are listed at the bottom of the page. This will be changed soon so that there is a summary of names at the top of the page. Please contact me as per our web page to contribute to this bursary. http://seenite.org/index2.html The current list of contributors is much longer than that displayed on the web page. Cheers Ross Knight Ottawa |
