I am: 40 year old male, cycling for 9 months now - very much enjoying using my PT.
For the last few weeks, I've been attending group windtrainer sessions, concentrating on LT. 3 x 15 minutes at 250watts, with 15 minutes rest. I usually warm up with around 30 minutes at 140watts. Last night, in the group, it was supposed to be a tempo ride, so I just started in at 210watts (100rpm, small gear riding high resistance on the 'trainer), and rode 45 minutes ... before the coach set us a new task = 3 x "stepping up" ... which at my level was: 180w 4 mins, 210w 4 mins, 250w 5 mins, then 1min max ... with 5 minute rests between. After riding 45 minutes at tempo, I found these efforts really tough. Much tougher than riding 3 x 15min at 250watts with 15 minute rests. My question is this: should 45 minutes tempo riding have had such a dramatic effect on later LT efforts ? |

It sounds as though your 40K TT max power is not much more than 250w. So, at 210w you're well above your recovery zone. I imagine your HR at 210w is ~95% of your 40K TT max power HR. Breathing is probably a bit ragged and you have to concentrate to maintain a steady power. Sure, this will make subsequent high-intensity efforts more difficult. It's not so different from riding a 20K TT before you start your intervals. I do recovery rides at 200w-210w and I know that they would be much more difficult at, say, 230w.
