i reckon the best cycleways in Sydney include
M4 cycleway... look forward it being linked up all the way to the city as a cycleway Prospect Reservoir... Hopefully the PVC (Parra Valley Cycleway will be as good as the above) I am just blow away by the excellent construction of these cycleways of course, almost all of Canberra is a cycleway

I use the one opposite the PVC
Starts at Siverwater Bridge along the southern bank of the river to the Olympic park wharf. Then an easy ride down about 400m of road into bicentennial pk. Very nice along the river there, apart from those squiggly lines painted all over them (dizzy) the Cooks river one is also a pleasant ride |

MTBing: Yarra Bend, Yarra flats. Follows the Main Yarra trail (sealed) from Fairfield Boathouse[pipe bridge] to Westerfolds park. About 40kms single track off & on.
Melways mp44, k1 to map 33 d1. Best thing about it : takes 10min to ride to it from home. central lovcation, good mix of track. Sure there are other MTBing areas like Lysterfield, but that involved carting the bike there first (unless you wanna ride 30kms on road just to get to the start of it).

Yep the Yarra Trail is cool. 5 minutes to get there for me The singletrack's there for fun, or if you're just after an easy recovery type ride you can take the wide gravel track. In terms of actual 'paths', my vote is for the Eastern Freeway one, because of its sheer practicality. I commuted on it for a good 3 years and is excellent, well maintained surface (well except for that bit that runs along the freeway and golf course), links up to a lot of other tracks (including the Yarra Trails )

My favorites:
The Adelaide Veloway that runs down to Maclaren Vale The on-road cycle lanes on Canberra's trunk roads (Northbourne Av., Adelaide Av. etc.) |

My Sydney favourites: what bike paths?
OK, so that's tongue in cheek, but none of my regular rides involve useful bike paths, although I sometimes ride on the road beside them. It's too slow crossing the side streets and getting on and off the road. And they're always swarming with pedestrians. |

... and my fave off road one would be Glendale Crossing to Brandy Flat Hut and then down to Caloola Farm.

Although it is very short (3.5 kns a lap I think), the centennial park one is amongst my faves.
Why? You're kidding? I hear. Well, it's right near the UNSW, lots of young lady power-walkers (or men for our lady posters) to keep me distracted and happy for a few laps. |

I think its closer to 3.7kms and the scenery is very distracting in summer! We use the eastern end of the Cooks River Cycleway which runs east of the Princes Hwy along pastthe airport before it drops on to Coward St. Most cycleways are not tandem friendly and having to brake for pedestrians gets wearing. There is also a bit of cycleway from UNSW to Centennial Park that is OK. Most cycleways are more dangerous than riding on the road. Centennial Park has the hazard of suddenly stopping cars on the weekend as morons park in the cycle lane to offload ther BBQ supplies and people. Early morning on Tuesdays and Thursdays there are the training packs who can be very upset when overtaken. Cheers Geoff |
