Default TDF speeds since 1903

With all the talk regarding this year's TDF speeds, I found this website http://www.torelli.com/raceinfo/tdf/tdfstats.html
and did some quick calculations. This may have been done here before, but I did not see or get a search return? Results are listed below, draw your own conclusions.

Years ..........%change in avg. speed (km/hr)........Avg. length of tour(km)
1903-13............ +4.034........................................ 4229
1914-24............ -9.633 ........................................ 5445
1925-35............ +23.489 ...................................... 4398
1936-47 ........... +.977.......................................... 4424
1948-58 ........... +10.397....................................... 4655
1959-69 ........... -.183........................................... 4340
1970-80 ........... -1.250......................................... 3962
1981-91 ........... -.547........................................... 3784
1992-02 ............ +1.078........................................ 3736
2003-05............. +1.744........................................ 3475

Be careful with comparisons, overall race distance changed over time, sometimes rather quickly and drastically. World wars intervened, etc.
Not a scientific comparison!
