I am planning to be in New Zealand between Christmas and New Year and the first 2 weeks for January and was hoping to use the time for a bit of winter training (I live in England).
Having bought the travel guides etc it seems like there are loads of good places to ride but my main concern is the weather. How hot is it going to be? More importantly will I just fry because of the ozone hole? 5 or 6 hours in the sun straight from our miserable autumn/winter could be a shock. Any advice most welcome! |

It'll be 25C - 30C and humid depending on where you go. Canterbury (Sth Island), and Hawkes Bay and Bay of Plenty (Nth Island) are probably the least humid. You will fry unless you repeatedly apply sun block. It's not like the Med where you get a nice tan and not much burn. You'll need to be prepared to have a few wet days as well, it can chuck it down around Christmas/New Year on occasion. You'll have fun though, there are some races/fun rides around that time, a couple of half ironmans and a crit or two, plus the Tour de Vineyards starting 1st Jan in Nelson http://www.cyclingnz.com/events.phtml?n=1035. Check the events on the CyclingNZ web site for other events. |
