Default Childs Road Bike?

My Son would like a road bike for his birthday but I've only found one possibility which is the Trek KDR1000. Does anyone know of any others out there with a standover height of 17 & 1/4"? I've tossed around using a womens specific also. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I'm running out of time. What I don't do for this kid.

All are kids frames with 20", 24" or 650c wheels, some with STI.

I get the feeling you've been here before. I found the Felt F24 but not on there website so I e-mailed them about it; But couldn't find the others on there websites. I'll try more later, thanks for the help. I'm getting excited about him cycling down the road or trail with his Mom and I in his little jersey and shorts w/helmet of course.

Later!

I bought my 7 year old son a Trek MT220 and it's worked out quite. We don't do a lot of off road stuff so I put more street worthy tires on it, and changed out some stuff I had laying around (seat, aluminum seat post, stem and bars - which all dropped the weight a fair amount). It's pretty big for him, but once he's in the saddle, it fits quite well.

I needed the adjustable crank arm length and only Trek and Gary Fisher had that. All the other manufacturers offer 150-160mm cranks - which I calculated to be equivalent to me riding with a 230mm crank!

We like the versatility it offers to trail ride and road ride. 20 miles is a breeze for him now!

F 24: http://www.feltracing.com/2005_bikes/2005_f24.html
Merida, click on the logo: http://www.advancetraders.com.au/australiaindex.html My former GF rides a Road 240, 650c race wheels, 160 cranks, STI, a pocket rocket!

Yes crank length may be a problem, some come with 150, some 160. Avanti won't be available in USA, however Try Specialised and Diamondback for a similar model.

Giant Website:
http://www.giantbicycles.net/au/030...=2006&range=127 My LBS has one of these, it has 150mm cranks.

Thanks much for the input, I've got two to look at road bike wise in my area and three mountain bike wise to look at also. His heart is set on the road bike but he understands if they're too big for him and he knows he'll be ready next year.

Thanks Again!

WOW, I would love to get him the 200 but alas, they sell them not in the U.S.
I sent them an e-mail to see if there's a way to get one. The shop with the Trek said they had the KDR1000 and would put it together in about an hour for me to see, turns out they didn't have one and instead tried to sell me something else. I really think they knew all along they didn't have one. The FELT I can get from my friends shop so as soon as it's in I can check it out. As long as he wants a road bike I'll give it my all to get him one. Who knows, today the fastest in the neighborhood, tomorrow the TDF.

If you buy a TERRY which has 650c wheels, then you will probably find that it has a much higher resale potential ... and, it will probably be a much nicer bike.

If he's too small for a TERRY, then you should consider just getting a 24" bike from WalMart rather than spending an excessive amount of money ...

Wow. I just looked at the kids 24" road bike as in one of the other posts. It is beautiful, and with Raliegh's latest paint job, same as Diamondback's 06 models. I'll bet it would bring him some joy if it is the size you're looking for. If he has the need for speed, I'd change the rear cassette (tops at 16t for safety), but those are inexpensive and there are plenty that work well with the Sora group.
