Trek Stem height adjustment

Hello all

I am new to mountain biking, but used to ride quite a bit of freestyle bikes back in the day. I just recently bought a Trek 4300 and was wanting to adjust my stem height down about an inch or so for comfort, the manual says that I need to take it to the dealer since it requires bearing adjustment. I am a pretty DIY type of person and wanted some feedback on whether this was something that I could actually do myself, without any special tools. Thanks

stems arent all that complicated and if you have some DIY skill, pull it apart and take a look at it, the stem will sllide off the steerer tube once you take the top cap off and loosen the stem clamp bolts and you'll be able to take out the spacers that are under the stem and either put them on top or cut down the steerer so theres no excess tube, put the top cap back in and tighten untill there is no play left in the headset bearings and obviously tighten the stem clamp bolts after that.

but that probably wont give you that much adjustment depending on the size of spacers there, you might have to change stem angles and/or lengths to get the height you want.
