Hey People,
I have been riding for a few years on a giant OCR3. Now I am looking to upgrade to a better bike in the thought of racing, and would like your thoughts on what are the best value bikes in the range $2500 to $3000. Cheers |

The new cannondale R700 seems like a good bike in that price range, I have the R1000 and think it's a great bike. Also bikes by Felt are always good value.

Are you a Shimano guy? If so, I'd say you'd be looking at an Ultegra-equipped bike, and it's hard to beat Giant for value. You should be able to get a full carbon Ultegra Giant for under 3 grand. At the end of last year I saw some '04 models being sold for $2400, and one was even sold for $2000!!!!
Who knows, you might even get a Dura-Ace Giant for $3000.This is the best time of year to buy at the big shops because they'll be trying to clear all their 2005 models. Apart from Giant, there are a gazillion brands: I'd be looking at Trek, Cannondale, Scott, Specialized, Felt, Lemond, Fuji, and maybe Bianchi. There's a shop in Melbourne (SBR) selling 105 equipped Cervelos for $2500. If you wanna go for a cheaper brand with better components, there's stuff like, Alchemy, Avanti, Cytek, Gitane, Learsport, Merida, Azzurri and Norco |

If you are happy with the OCR geometry how about a 2006 OCR Composite around $2999. Not sure how much carbon TCR's go for but you could try out some 2005 TCR composites as well. Most people on here seem to think that the TCR models are more suited to racing than the OCR's so if you are thinking of going down this path and sticking with Giant then look into the TCR's. |

Yeah if you are going to go racing, the TCR geometry gives you a more agreesive racing position, mainly a shorter head tube and shorter wheelbase. I purchased a OCR 06 composite, and could not be happier with it. It gives me a more upright riding position, as I have got a rather large midsection . The OCR composite is really beautiful to ride and look at.I was at the bike fair in Sydney over the weekend, and it was the first time I had a close up look at the Bianchi carbon bikes. They are really nice. The Pinarello's were fantastic as well. |

If it's value for money you are after then you can't go past a Giant. I know that the same factory in Taiwan pumps out Avanti, Giant, Specialised and I think Felt.
Now is a good time to buy as the shops are throwing out 05 stock before the 06 comes in. I know you can pick up a Campy Centaur Equipped, carbon 05 TCR Euro for about $2499. I think you will struggle to find better value than that anywhere. |

Small proviso on that one - it's a great time to buy if you ride an average sized frame (ie. you don't ride an unusually small or large frame)! I ride a S/XS/48cm (depending on the manufacturer), and none of the stores I looked at during September/October had anything in that size. Ended up buying a '06 bike. I guess I should have looked during the Tour! Most stores are selling '06 stock now anyway, and if you're a decent negotiator and have a cool poker face, you should be able to get a really good deal. Onto Craig's original question, for full priced bikes, the Giant TCR series is a really good value bike, as others have said. I've always found the Avanti to be good value and although slightly more expensive, they tend to me slightly better spec'd than the equivalent Giant, although I don't know about this year's models. If a recognised brand name isn't important to you, maybe try a Learsport or Cytek bike. Google the names, and you should turn something up. I think they're both Australian companies, but as with everybody else, make their frames in Taiwan. Both make full Ultegra bikes for about $2100. |
