I'm not getting the clicking sound that is typical when the rear wheel is spun (that is, when not pedalling). Does this suggest that the hub is damaged? The missus has an identical bike and the clicking sound is there.

That sound actually comes from the cluster not the rear hub, so your cluster might be on the way out.

NO! Its the pawls in the freehub body, spin the wheel and not the chain/cassette, clicking = normal.

If the freehub coasts as normal and engages pawls for pedalling as normal, then it is working. I imagine that the different sound of your wife's freehub may relate to a lesser amount of contained lubricant. Does it really make no clicking at all, or just soft clicking?
"Cluster" is a vague term when applied to modern bicycle anatomy; it is better to talk about freehub body and cassette. The normal clicking sound certainly does not come from the cassette. My advice would be not to worry. |
