What's a reasonable price for a powermeter? I'm thinking of something with the accuracy of a PowerTap or SRM that lets you use whatever wheels you wish.
If you're on the fence for a powermeter, what would make you buy one? Those of you not interested at all, why not? |

votes are clearly biased into the brackets that include the powertap & the SRM!
realistically i think about $1000 is a fair price for the SRM also and i beleive the company who manufacture them could possibly make a lot more cash selling a lot more of them for that kind of price (but then of course that may not be their goal.)

I'd be very willing to pay for a system like the SRM at the cost of a PT SL. But, i'd like them to have the ability measure altitude or have GPS functionality so you can view course profile, etc |

Both the SRMs and powertap SLs are overpriced. It's sad to see people throw down $1200 on an SL thinking the small weight difference from the Pro is actually going to make any difference in the average race. You can get a good used powertap Pro wheel for under $500 now, that is the way to go.
It was fun winning races last year on my 4lb rear wheel. As for SRM, they are ridiculous. 3 grand for the dura ace model? lmao I think the amatuer costs 1200? but the accuracy is crap. You can also see this kind of markup on bikes, obviously. I ride a Cdale caad 5 frame that cost me $300 from the LBS. Weight is nearly the same as the new Optimo frame (we're talking a few grams difference I think?) which must cost at least 5 times the price. I now see cat 5s showing up at the races with their 5 grand "pro wannabie" bike fitted with SRM dura ace powermeter. oh well

Take the SRM price list and multiply by 0.5. Then, I'd put an SRM Pro on all of my bikes.

Reasonable is less than $500, but that doesn't mean I haven't spent more. Fortunately for dozens of bike related companies reasonable doesn't enter into any of my bike related purchases.
