Hi,
I've been road racing on & off for almost 20 years. I recently started training again, about six months ago, and have had some ongoing foot problems. Had same issue in 1999 with same bike & pedals but different pair of shoes. I'm looking for advice from others who might have experienced similar problem. I feel pain on the bottom outer edge of my right foot about halfway back. The longer I ride the more it hurts. It seems to go away if I concentrate on rotating my foot inward on the downward stroke. I have look pedals with red cleat (float). I have the same problem in left foot but to a much lessor degree. In fact it rarely hurts enough to even detect. I also run and am generally considered a pronator. I use anti-pronation shoes. If I go on a hard effort ride of 2 hours or more, I can't walk without favoring foot for several hours. I tried inserts, no inserts, Dr. scholls, green superfeet. I also have adjusted saddle up and down, fore and aft to no avail. I've adjusted cleat position but that does not seem to work either. I switched from my Sidi's to Carnacs about 3 months ago thinking that my shoes were the culprit. The Carnac's are a significant improvement in terms of overall comfort, however, the pain is still there. It seems that maybe I'm supinnating but I 'm not sure how to correct. Also, is it possible for me to pronate when running and suppinate while riding? I'll likely see a podiatrist next, but wanted to hear about any similar problems. The rest of my positioning on the bike is fine - knees, butt and legs are never a problem. Sorry about the length of this post. |

I've never had problems with feet (except for cramps) but I did have a bothersome problem with my left knee. It really left me depressed to think that middle age was going to limit my bike mileage!
Well just a simple 5 degree tip of my left cleat outward (thus tipping my left toe inward) solved the problem in no less than a miraculous manner - I use SPD's with quite a bit of 'float' as well. So maybe you should experiment with clip-in angles? |

Could be heel spurs for which a heel cup may be the answer. The latter can be purchased either at a real running shoe store or medical supply establishment.
