Default New to cycling- need gear advice

Hi everyone-
I am just starting in the world of cycling. I have been a runner for over a year nd have decided to try a mini triathalon this summer. I have a bike, but nothing else.
Can you guys recommend how to shop for a helmet, shorts and anything else you think will help make my training easier. What is the types of things I need to look for ragrding fit, etc.
Also, when I had attempted cycling a long time ago I had problem with numbness. I am guessing I did not have a proper saddle. Anything advice you can give me on this also would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You !!!!!!

That's a pretty broad question so its kind of hard to see where to start to answer it. I think if you search around a little bit in this forum you will find that there has been quite a lot of discussion about equipment and clothing (especially saddles). It would probably be a good idea to read up a little, maybe visit your local bike shop and bit and come back with some more specific questions.

I know where you're coming from, so I may be able give you a little more helpful answer than the other reply.
1. road bike (mtn bikes suck for long distances over the road, but you can buy smooth road tires if you already have a mtn bike, it'll help)
2. helmet
3. For training: cycling shorts, moisture wicking jersey, sports bra and cycling socks (not cotton socks), water bottle and cage that goes on your bike, swimsuit and goggles
4. Race Day: Tri-suit (many prefer one-piece suits), race number belt (you may have this already from running road races), transition bag (a backpack is fine), visor or cap for the run (if sunny or hot), sunglasses for the bike, small towel and snacks or energy gels, brightly colored swim cap, substantial goggles (little pool goggles dont work well in open water), gatorade for afterwards to recover and replace fluid, quick drying socks
5. Optional: clipless pedals and special cycling shoes with velcro straps, clip on aero bars, quick laces for your running shoes (the elastic laces that stretch so you dont have to waste time tying your shoes in T2)

Go to http://www.performancebike.com/shop...y_triathlon.cfm for examples of the stuff Im talking about.

For a mini triathlon, I wouldn't carry along spare tubes or pumps for your bike, as it is probably unnecessary for such a short distance. Also, dont spend a ton until you're sure that you're gonna do more triathlons and you like cycling a lot, cause vs. the other two sports, cycling can get really expensive (ask my fiance!)

Good luck. Remember that almost anyone can complete a mini without any problem, even without fancy gear, and triathlons are SO MUCH FUN, you'll be hooked once you cross the finish line.
