Unhappy Route through Camp Pendleton????????

Can you get from San Clemente to Oceanside legally along the coast?

My map shows only Route 5 freeway.

Since February last year, a flash of a driver's license to the sentry at the Del Mar, South, or Las Pulgas gates gets you into and through the base. (North of Las Pulgas, you can use the runway, tank tunnel, and San Onofre State Beach park - you'll be stopped if any of these are being used for their primary purpose. If they are you'll need to turn around) The MP's are strict (much more so than the sheriff) about riding single file and obeying traffic laws while on the base. You also must have a helmet.

On the other hand, after 9/11 the shoulder on both sides of 5 were repaved for cyclists between the freeway entrances at South gate and Las Pulgas making a smooth, much more direct route. However, you need to not be bothered by semis making 80 mph just off your left shoulder.

Thanks

Actually I am looking for a way to ride a Moped and I thought you could get me started. Riding a moped is legal in some bike lanes so I first wanted to know if there is a bike lane. Now I have to find out if riding a moped is legal there.

Sounds like Mopeds are legal on the I5.

Now I have to see how friendly the marines are.

If the sign as you enter I5 does not specifically exclude "motor driven cycles" (like it excludes pedestrians) you might be OK. As a practical matter, it would be up to the descretion of the CHP officer who pulls you over and to a lesser extent your negotiating skills.

Marine sentries have no descretion and they aren't going to take any guff. In the absence of a specific regulation allowing mopeds, you will be summarily turned away.

Good luck.

Moped on I5? You have to be kidding me! If that is what you're saying, you're just plain loco!

Now if you're talking about a moped through Pendleton, you might equally be kind of crazy. I will tell you from experience (as a driver, not as a cyclist) that drivers on Pendleton are as crazy or moreso than normal because they think they're on nice rural roads and THEY have the right-of-way...I can't give you specific examples, but Camp Pendleton is infamous for motorists getting into accidents. I will tell you from my experience as a driver driving along Basilone and Vandergrift (to Mainside) that cyclists can be (expletive) because they do not ride in single-file and instead go in a huge mob...this is just inconsiderate to others and dangerous.

Anyway, I wouldn't ride a moped anywhere, esp on I5 or on the roads of Camp Pendleton.

Good luck/be safe!
