Smile Start Cycling

Hi, I am new to there forums and would like to ask some advice from experienced riders. I am 18 years old with over 10 years of competitive sport experience outside of cycling. I feel I have a strong foundation for cycling. I have strong legs, and a good build, im not heavy. What are your thoughts on getting into cycling at 18, and what my outlook is like? Currently I train in the gym, I train everything, for legs I train heavy sqauts, and I do spinning.

Any advice is highly apprecieted, thanks.

The only way you are going to find out what your outlook in cycling is by riding your bike. I know some guys that look like they ride the couch more than riding there bike but kick everyone elses butt. You might be a great rider the only way any one can tell you that is by racing or hooking up on weekend rides with a club or team. If you look at tiaa-crefs riders who around our age http://www.cyclingnews.com/teams/5280/2006/?id=riders you will see that they are small in size. These guys are some of the best 18-24 year olds around. I am 6'2" and weigh around 220. I lift a lot and can squat more than most guys i ride with, but they kick my but on long distances. I can out sprint them but that is about it. But to be a great cyclist is to just ride. The one sport that i have seen when i was in high school that had some of the fastest riders came from cross-country running because of thier aerobic capacity. If you check out the forums under trainning you will see most guys say just ride and dont do the gym.
