Hi all
I have been diagnosed as having a bakers cyst in my left knee. I've already had surgery once to remove it and fix any underlying problems in the joint (torn meniscus, bone chips etc) however it has now come back. And its actually bigger and a whole lot more painful than before. I'm having a cortisone injection later today to hopefully help the problem but to be honest I'm extremely disheartened by the situation. I'm not happy that the problem has come back... makes me question the abilities of my surgeon. And now its affecting my training and bike riding. Has anyone else had similar problems and if so what has been done about them? Thanks Trish |

hi Trish
I hope things are going OK with your knee problem. i spotted your post from April as my physio believes the lump in the back of my left knee is a bakers cyst. It feels like swelling the size of half a marble and seems to come and go. It is keeping me off the bike for a while now as it is worse than ever and i'm booked in to see a knee specialist to see if it is due to damaged meniscus etc. Did you get an MRI? In the meantime in trying to strengthen the surrounding muscles but as you said it is a disheartening problem. thanks Chris |

I had a bakers cyst develop in my left knee over the course of 2 years after my original surgery on the joint to fix a torn meniscus. The cyst developed in the back of the knee, but it wasn't visible to the naked eye and I couldn't feel it with my bare hands.
The cyst restricted my range of motion and it was painful for me to try and have my left heel touch my left glut when trying to stretch my quads. On my right leg which was fine I had complete range of motion, but the injured left knee only had about 70% range of motion. I knew something was not right with the joint, and the doctor confirmed the presence of the cyst after viewing an MRI. A few weeks later I had surgery, and the cyst was fixed. It was about the size of a large grape! The knee swelled up after surgery (to be expected), but since the cyst wasn't associated to any weight-bearing parts of my knee I was immediately able to stand. Within a week I was walking freely and 2 weeks post-op I was back on the bike. I now have full range of motion in my injured knee and am thankful to have a doctor who fixed it 100%. -Thanks, Todd |
