Default Advice on new bike.

I am in the market for a new hybrid type bicycle. I am wanting to use it for exercise ( mostly on pavement and maybe some light trails) and I am new to riding. I picked up a cheap department store mountain bike last fall and have ridden it off and on since then. So far I really enjoy riding and I want to get a better bike, but I only want to spend $250 to $350 because the desire may die out and I already spend too much on golf equipment and don't want to get started down that path with biking. Anyway, does anyone have any advice on what would give me the most bang for my buck? Thanks in advance!
