Default How do I start cycling?

I would like to do some cycling, even if it's just for some excersise and a good time, but I am not sure how to start. Like what do I need? the only bike I have is an old mountain bike, so should I get a new road bike? Clipless pedles? I am just not sure if I need all of this stuff, and I really don't want to spend that much money because I have to pay for school. Please help! Am I making this more difficult then it should be?

Pump up the tyres, oil the chain, check the brakes, set the saddle to the correct height, read the highway code...and off you go.
