Never have I trained as hard or as often as lately. This boat I have has kind of helped me too since it's moored so far away in the countryside. That means if I wish to work on my boat, I have to ride as I don't drive a vehicle. Not only do I cycle to work, but I throw in my rides to the boat on top of actual training rides.
Not only that but there's a nice 25 per cent winding lane near to my boat I can go up on my way back - in my smallest gear. I tend to sprint up it and that's after some 4 hours or so of working on the boat. Then there's the weights sessions I still do so I have my work cut out. So, if you wanna get in shape, buy a canal boat but make sure it's moored a long way off and you don't have a car to fall back on. Shame about the weather, though. Seems like I'm always riding in the rain. |

Just imagine how fit I’m going to be after digging the blasted canal for this canal boat. |

Hello, Don, how's it going? Long time no see.
The boat is coming along very well - I've been working my ass off, so to speak. In fact, I just got back having cycled many miles. The only bad news is so far I've failed to find an engineer who's any good in this area. They all seem to give up after one go although the engine has been running. My plan is to get the painting done while the good weather lasts. But yes, slowly it's getting there and I've every intention of following the job through. By the way, I got knocked off my bike some weeks ago by a taxi - he hit me from the left coming out of a roundabout. It was pouring with rain and I went straight over the bumper and all these women were screaming and getting out of their vehicles as I lay on tghe concrete. Not a mark on me, though. Just torn gloves, bruised knuckles and it hurt me to piss for a day or so - maybe knocked my side. Quote:

Can't believe that there's no-one in your area who can work on engines, have you considered getting onto a boat forum and making some contacts there?

Good news that the engine has started anyway. What's the problem?Does it start and then fail to continue running?
Did you get any "sympathy" from the screaming women? ![]()

I joined a popular canalboat forum and, yes, I speak with other boaters online. Funnily enough, nobody there could find much to say about my engine difficulties. The majority either have outboards or inboard lister engines or beta marine e.t.c.
I simply don't have time to carry out bodywork and paint while tackling the engine at the same time but, soon as I can, I'll have to change the filter and drain the water out of the diesel. I had an autoelectrician and paid him quite well but he totally seems to have lost interest. There just seems to be no get-up-and-go and he's not been back so far. Quote:

I was told a little diesel was leaking through a washer or something on the fuel injection pump. I really wouldn't like to mess about with the pump at this stage.
I do have books to help me, however. I have the Haynes manual for my Golf engine and an excellent book on marine electrics I got for only 6 pounds reduced at a bookshop. This contains wiring diagrams that may help me. At the moment I'm rubbing down the entire boat and removing all the dirt, grime and flaked paint. It's a huge job often requiring me to kneel and scrub with wet and dry paper - no sanding tool available. Soon as I get to painting, things will start to look different. What was an old, neglected, half-rotten wreck will begin to look like a real, gleaming canal-boat. One day it will be tiled inside, varnished, fitted out and even stocked with the odd bottle of plonk - for entertaining the female gender onboard. Quote:
