This Sunday, Mr Paul Johnson, of Premier Iemma’s electorate of Lakemba, will be leading a protest ride from The Premier’s electorate office in Riverwood to William Street in Kings Cross.
Mr Paul Johnson said, “I considered having a hunger strike, but that just seemed daft, the 3Cs, Cycling, Coffee and Chocolate go together so well. So I’m calling on the vegan cyclist hordes of Sydney to descend on William St and protest the removal of the William St bike lanes by eating meat (or a viable meat substitute if you must) this Sunday at a Kings Cross back-of-the-bike sausage sizzle. The government shouldn’t have all the fun doing stupid things like getting rid of bike lanes. We can match their dullness with something suitably senseless.” Mr Johnson is converting a bicycle trailer into a mobile BBQ, and will be bringing a tandem to pull it, the stokers seat is reserved for Morris Iemma if he accepts the invitation to join. Others with tandems have been asked to invite their local politician. To read the rest of the media release visit www.bikesydney.org |

Cycleway usage builds after the path is open. With the improvement in safety, people start riding that didn't previously ride. We only have to look at Anzac Bridge, when it was first opened, there wern't a lot of riders, but you wouldn't say that today.

also bear in mind that
this email will not undo the changes once it is down in a technical report that has been adopted by a committee then it is almost impossible to get it over turned unless you hold a critical mass there everyday for teh next 2 weeks stop traffic and the like its as good as gone all we can do is use the facilities provided to us by the government unless someone has a political party/journo behind the cause it is almost a forgone conclusion while i applaud the protest ride and i am all for proactive polictical statements there have been numerous calls for cyclists to turn up on these protest rides and buggerall people have turned up as far as i am aware of please correct me if am wrong so then the question is raised are we going to care if future removals happen my answer is probably not why simplyy because and its my belief not im not sure of others that some cyclists believe that a cycle lane creates a duality or confusion in the australian road rules as interpreted by motorists while legally we are entitled (and should have) the lanes or the laneway depending on the conditions however the motorists believe that if tehre is a cycle lane we should be in the cycle lane and only the cycle lane . it is because of this that most cyclists use the carriageway instead of the cycleway sorry if that was a little long winded but thats my interpretation on this thread Cheers Jey good luck tommorrow take some pictures for the thread |

The problem is it has set a precedent for the gov to follow. They are now looking at the Lane Cove Tunnel and the removal of the cycling facilities there as well.

The stupidity of the current state government is breathtaking. At a time of high petrol prices and a city choking on its own traffic congestion, they are looking at ways of making harder to use alternative forms of transport.
Unfortunately, in comparison with Canberra or Melbourne, the Sydney cycling community is relatively small and relatively disorganised, so it has very little political muscle. |
