Hi everyone, I will try to describe as best as I can from what I have been suffering every bike rides.
I start riding more seriously with bike now. I only have done 200KM long ride so far. However, there are 2 areas which always stop me from enjoying the ride. 1. From the design of bike gloves I have seen, most of them if not all focus on the nerves going to the little finger direction. My problem is the other way round, I never have any problem with those nerve, instead I always have a pain/cramp on the palm in thumb area (the area below the thumb). It happens after around 30 minutes of riding, changing the position of the hands didn't do any good. I have used 2 gloves so far, the newest one is with extra padding on the thumb area, even that doesn't help anything. The pain is gone or reduced after I do harder ride but it's still there, that is when my body is already warmed-up or I may say when I have my 'second-wind'. 2. Now come to my second problem after the second-wind. This problem is even more annoying than the first one. It is my lower back, the bones (or spines) above the tail bones, parallel to the hip bones. After only 10km I usually start feeling the pain. The pain is only on the right side of the body. The pain has existed even if I don't ride. but the bike ride makes the pain more apparent. If I don't stop the ride (ignoring the pain), I will soon feel my butt getting numb which then affecting my right leg and right foot becoming numb. I don't know if shoes has anything to do with the foot's numb. The worst occured just yesterday, the pain affected my 'nut' (again right one) becoming sore. Well to be honest, I also feel this pain (from nut sore to numbness on the right butt area) whenever I ejaculate. I've talked about this to my doctor, which happens to be a cyclist himself. But according to him, my condition is more like a nerve-pinched. At this time he recommends me to do more exercise particularly swimming to strengthen my back muscle. Well I do also sit in front of computer for a long time, which I also think may cause the lower back pain. What I am not sure now is what actually happens to my lower back, and if there any other things you can suggest I can do. Or is it related to nutrition deficiency during the ride or in life general? Thank you for your time reading this, really appreciate it. ![]() |

What kind of bike are you riding? Sounds like you're riding a road bike. You're problem seems to be quite complex, especially the nutty part. I think the Drs. advise is good. I would also recommend to try riding in a more upright position. Hope you get better soon. |

I ride Giant OCR, so it should be quite upright for a road bike, although sometimes I like to bend myself as much as possible when I am riding fast.
But really the soreness due to bending my body for a period of time is different to the annoying problem I have. I can feel the sore muscle due to bending differently than thelower back pain. |

Also, after my accident, I found out I could not ride my road bike without experiencing a lot of pain. No matter what I did, it kept getting worse. I switched to training w/ my TT bike and it got a lot better. I've found out that the more forward and higher my saddle is, the less strain on my back. Of course, there is a compromise w/ power, but you may want to try make small adjustments to see how it feels. Again, I'm no expert but I think tweaking your position might help alleviate your symptoms. |

Thanks Bill. Expert or not, you just gave me an idea I can try myself, so I really thank you for the input.
![]() Maybe those hours sitting down may cause the muscle stiffness, so trying the massage with tennis ball may worth a try. |

Hehe George, I start feeling you are an angel (either that.. or a stalker
), you are always there when I am in need of help ![]() From the rides I have been on, I notice the pain on the palm only occurs in the beginning ( I may already mentioned this) when I am still warming up. Also don't know if it's related, I had a broken wrist from the accident, and it still hurts somehow. But I keep the positive tought, I love even more riding the bike everytime I do it and I always promote to get a bike to all my friends, the more the merrier. |

I am afraid I cannot solve your problem, but I can explain why padding does not help the thumb. The ulnar nerve (little finger and ring finger) runs between the wrist bones and the skin, and is easily compressed when you put pressure on the heel of your hand. Padding this area will reduce the nubness in the little finger and ring finger. The medial nerve (index finger and middle finger) and the radial nerve (thumb) run through the carpal tunnel. If there is inflammation or narrowing of the carpal tunnel, no amount of padding is going to help.
Are you gripping the bar too tightly? If so, this will contribute to the pain in your thumb. Also, do you have your wrist bent sharply? If so, this will cause the carpal tunnel to become more narrowed, putting more pressure on the radial nerve. |
