I'm in the very beginnings of planning a biking trip across the US. I'm either doing it my summer after graduating college or some other time when I can get lots of time off...and have more money...
With that being said, does anyone have a rough estimate of how much a trip would cost? I should mention that I would cheat a bit, and have a support vehicle. Also, I plan on camping to save some cash. My estimated route goes from WA, down through OR, ID, WY, CO, on through KS, MO, and eventually ending on the coast of of NC or SC. Not that it should add too much $$$ on to the trip, but on the way I'd like to see as many of the weird roadside attractions as I can - like gas stations shaped like teapots, worlds largest ball of string, etc. Any help is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks! |

A cross country bicycling tour can cost about as little or as much as you want it to cost if you have the money. I can cycle across the USA for ten dollars a day, but usually I spend more like twenty because I like my coffee, decent restaurants, and my comforts. I have never been on a supported tour like the one you mention. I camp most of the time, sometimes 90 % of my total nights on the road are spent out in the open. I use motels by getting there at opening time in the morning and staying for at least two full days for rest. I might use a motel two days out of every eight or ten days. |
