Default Cycling in Europe

how popular is cycling a mainstream sport in Europe? how would it compare to your other popular sports and football, baseball, basketball in the U.S. I'm wondering about this as it has almost no standing as a mainstream sport in the U.S. I'm sure this sounds very ignorant to many of you but I've wondered about this for a while. thanks.

in europe bike racing is a big deal, its a tradition, "its in there blood." all the spectators know all the riders, they have trading cards and everything. there are races in nearly everyday and hundreds of spectators come out to watch the local races, and the prize money is typically very good, especially considering the entry fees are less $5. everyone rides bikes in europe, its one of there primary modes of transportation. there are many high school bicycle leagues and velodormes in a majority of the big towns. belgium is probably the biggest cycling country in the world, but europe as a whole really enjoys cycling.

one reason that the racing is so hard in europe is because if you don't make it as a bike racer then you're stuck on the farm or factory for the rest of your life.
