Sitting here this morning semi-conscious, waiting for the caffeine to activate my neuronal synapses, so I may have missed the point..... Anyways, was watching Sunrise on Ch 7 to fill in some time and caught the tail end of some discussion regarding "lawless cyclists" breaking road rules.
It seemed to have something to do with bunches riding in Centennial Park exceeding the posted 30 km/hr speed limit. Anyone know what the story is here? Just curious. |

I was out riding around the Bay Run at that time. But a buddy who rides in Centennial Park told me that park rangers has speed guns and would book those high speed riders in the morning. I did see a ranger sitting in his little 4WD waiting by the circuit three weekends ago at around 7am.

Crikey, it's hard to stay under 30 on that circuit. That's going to kill the training scene there if they're serious about enforcing it.

The good thing is they have installed speed guns with digital displays so you can sprint for the sign and get a speed read out as you go for it.

I must confess that I was making it a point of honour to get as high a number as I could on those signs... ![]() |

my confession as well I am quite happy that i did a big "59km/h Slow Down" on that big digital board after I put on my new wheelset last week. I think Cen. Park is one of the best place for cyclist for some fast lap practice, but of course we have to pick the right time, and try not to do on the "peak hour". I am thinking it should be fine if it is a quite day with not much cyclist around e.g. 5-6pm during weekday, only a few cyclist over there. don't shot me I know I break the rules .... but that's the only place I can find safe for some fast lap practice. |

I didn't see the report but from what my manager was telling me it doesn't seem as though it was just about breaking speeding rules. Apparently the 'bunch riders' were 'intimdating' to motorists as well. Also, one was apparently quoted as saying motorists were just jealous because they (cyclists) could go through red lights etc.
I just nodded and smiled and told my manager I was never that irresponsible . |

Perhaps it wasn't just motorists that were concerned with bunch riders, it was other park users as well (solo riders, rollerbladers etc). If we want to whinge about toolish behaviour of other road users we need to consider the example we are setting as well. It seems that to some, the anonimity of a bunch is perfect for ones consideration only extending to whoever is in the peleton... and how dare anyone else complain. After all - we're training!

It did sound a lot like they were trying to imply that the hell ride was also in Sydney.
The article also said that it was wrong to ride on the road portion of Centennial, despite the fact that these evil cyclist were riding over the speed limit. So somehow these speeding cyclists were blocking the cars. Journilists don't get paid very much. The roads around Olympic park is an alternative to Cetennial park. What about Heffron, can you ride around it when its not been used? |
