Default New Guy and his univega

Hi, I am the New Guy here, My name is Mark and I am from CT. I am just trying to get back into shape. (Need to loose about 30 pounds)I can no longer run due to a bad ankel injury so my Dr recomended biking. I dusted off the old Univega I would say about 12 years old but it is in real good condition. I had it tuned up last year and did not ride it untill tonight, it rode nice. It is an 18 speed hybrid and I plan to start out very slow. My one big question is this how do you avoid the temptation to coast. I see these guys always flying through town and I almost never see anyone coasting even down hill. How do you do that and maintain a relativly safe speed?
Thanks Mark aka marlin

the answer for me...i don't know. i'm never tempted to coast unless my buttocks are sore or toes are numb. i started riding in may and i don't remember if i had that temptation in the begining. if i did, it didn't last that long. so my guess is that, as your conditioning improves, your temptation to rest will go down. i did start out pretty easy (like 8-10 miles at 8-9 avg mph). within a couple of weeks, i was up to 15 miles at 12 mph. now, i ride 15-30 miles and i shoot for 15+ mph.

as far as safe speed, i've got a hybrid. there's no real issue there. the way i'm geared, at 27mph, i'm pedaling my legs off.

i lost 30 pounds in 2.5 months or so. diet played a large role. whenever i stall or hit a plateau, i take 2 or 3 days off of riding. that usually shocks my body into more weight loss when i start back up (although the 1st couple of rides afterwards are a real you-know-what).

Hi atomship47
How do you know how fast your going? and how often do you ride. Have you included any weight training to your routine?
30#'s in 2.5 months is outstanding!!

long story short, i had extra, health-related motivation to get into cycling, losing weight and dieting. how i did it...i didn't count calories or fat. i just ate less at one time, ate more often and made sure i had a healthy mix of protein and carbs. i made sure my carb intake was 90% or so from healthy sources like whole grains, milk and fruit. my nutritionist suggested 45-60 grams of carbs per meal and a very high protein intake. after cutting out junk food, i struggled to reach that range regularly.

i basically ride daily, rain or shine. i feel crappy if i don't.

as a bonus, i also dropped my cholesterol level by 110 points in a couple of months. i'm starting to think my doc misread my #'s because others i've spoken to said they've struggled to drop 20 points in that same time frame. if it's not a mistake, i guess the reduction is due to such a drastic weight loss in a short period of time (245 #'s in may, 212 #'s now - i was stuck at 215 for a month until this week).

i bought a 12 function odometer/timer. i use it to watch my cadence and track my avg speed. i would just set a goal for avg speed (in about 1mph increments) and work hard to reach it. i'm just about at my max tho. i can't seem to reach the 16mph mark (time for a new bike!).

i don't weight train (although i'm going to try to start up again). one of the reasons i chose cycling is because i used to just lift weights. i developed cts pretty badly so i had to give it up. now, my only other "training" is sporadic. i sometimes do about 30-40 minutes on a recumbent, stationary bike before bed.
